FAQ 163: Force Google SafeSearch or no SSL

Category: Everything else | Updated: 03/02/2017 9:04 AM

To enforce Google SafeSearch... (this is now referred to as SafeSearch VIP)
Go to a command prompt:  ping forcesafesearch.google.com
...see the IP address it resolves to, at the time this article was updated the IP was: 216.239.38.120
So you would add a line to your SimpleDNS=simpledns.txt file like this...
216.239.38.120 www.google.com
216.239.38.120 www.google.ca
...you need to do this for every Google ccTLD (such as .ca) that your users may visit. Optionally use DNS Redirector to block all other ccTLDs.

To enforce Google Search without SSL (not an HTTPS site)...
Go to a command prompt:  ping nosslsearch.google.com
...see the IP address it resolves to, at the time this article was updated the IP was: 216.239.32.20
So you would add a line to your SimpleDNS=simpledns.txt file like this...
216.239.32.20 www.google.com

To restrict which YouTube videos are viewable by users on your network/in your G Suite organization...
For Strict Restricted YouTube access:  ping restrict.youtube.com    ...at the time this article was updated the IP was: 216.239.38.120
or Moderate Restricted YouTube access:  ping restrictmoderate.youtube.com    ...at the time this article was updated the IP was: 216.239.38.119
So you would add the following lines to your SimpleDNS=simpledns.txt file like this...
216.239.38.120 www.youtube.com
216.239.38.120 m.youtube.com
216.239.38.120 youtubei.googleapis.com
216.239.38.120 youtube.googleapis.com
216.239.38.120 www.youtube-nocookie.com

Note: Before this change takes effect you will need to close all Internet browsers and flush the DNS cache

Note: For DNS Redirector cloud server customers, please contact us and we can enable these options for you.

Note: When using the 1st option, Google SafeSearch (with SSL), this means multiple Google products (gmail, drive, docs) will now use that IP as their endpoint. If you have load-balanced or multiple WAN links you might need to add this IP to your SSL persistence rules. For Peplink see this article.
