FAQ 128: Time restriction options

Category: Initial setup | Updated: 7/21/2016 1:10 PM

DNS Redirector v7.0.0.x and prior had some INI settings that forced all clients to be redirected to an "after hours" page.

In DNS Redirector v7.1.0.x and later this has been discontinued in favor of using a more robust solution; a Windows Scheduled Task.

For example:
- you don't want people parking around your building and using your HotSpot during non-business hours
- you want to prevent a cleaning crew from using your Internet late at night
- you want to turn off Internet access so your kids get so bored they actually go to sleep

Make a copy of your dnsredir.ini file and call it dnsredir-normal.ini
Make a new file called dnsredir-restrict.ini configured to do whatever you want
Make a new file called restrict.bat

The restrict.bat file should:
a) copy dnsredir-restrict.ini to dnsredir.ini (replacing the existing)
b) restart the software/service to make the change active

You can automate the time this restriction becomes active by using...
Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler
...define the program as C:\DNSREDIR\restrict.bat and the start in or working directory as C:\DNSREDIR

Later on, use another scheduled task to run a batch file to:
a) copy dnsredir-normal.ini to dnsredir.ini (replacing the existing)
b) restart the software/service to make the change active
